A local SEO checklist is only useful if it changes what shows up in the map pack — the three-result block that captures most clicks for “near me” searches. Most checklists online are long lists of tasks with no order and no proof. This one is ordered by leverage, so a single-location business can work through it in a month and a multi-location brand can apply it per location.
Local search still behaves differently from classic organic search: proximity, relevance, and prominence decide the ranking, and your Google Business Profile often matters more than your homepage. Treat the checklist below as the operating order, not a menu.
Local SEO checklist: the 12 steps that move rankings
- Fix your name, address, and phone number everywhere. One canonical NAP string, copied exactly to your site footer, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, and the main directories. Inconsistent suite numbers and old phone numbers are the most common silent killer.
- Verify and complete the Google Business Profile. Categories first (primary category drives relevance more than anything else you write), then hours, service area, attributes, and at least ten real photos.
- Add LocalBusiness structured data. Name, address, geo coordinates, opening hours, and sameAs links to your social profiles. This removes guesswork for crawlers.
- Build one page per location, not one page for all of them. Each page needs its own address, embedded map, staff or team photo, and directions from the nearest landmark.
- Write for service-plus-city queries. “Emergency plumber in [city]” deserves its own section with real local proof — service radius, response times, neighbourhoods covered — not a paragraph with the city name repeated.
- Put the map pack basics on the page. Click-to-call phone number, opening hours in text (not only an image), and a visible address. Mobile users decide in seconds.
- Collect reviews on a schedule. Ask after every completed job, reply to all of them within a week, and never buy reviews. Volume, recency, and response rate all correlate with prominence.
- Keep citations consistent. The ten directories that matter in your country beat a thousand scraped listings. Audit quarterly; aggregators propagate errors for years.
- Earn local links. Chamber of commerce, local press, sponsorships, suppliers, and community events. One relevant local link is worth more than fifty generic guest posts.
- Publish genuinely local content. Neighborhood guides, local regulations, seasonal advice. Content that could be published for any city does not help a local page.
- Make the site fast on mobile. Compress the hero image, cut render-blocking scripts, and test on a mid-range Android phone, not a desktop.
- Measure calls, directions, and form fills. Rankings are a proxy; the map pack exists to generate contact. Track GBP calls and direction requests monthly.
How local ranking actually works
Google’s local algorithm weighs three factors, and your checklist should map to them:
- Proximity — distance between the searcher and the business. You cannot change it, but you can stop fighting it: target the areas you can realistically serve rather than a city centre ten kilometres away.
- Relevance — how well your categories, services, and page content match the query. This is where most of the checklist does its work.
- Prominence — how well-known and well-reviewed the business is, online and offline. Reviews, links, citations, and brand searches feed it.
Practical consequence: a business ranking third because it is closer can be beaten on relevance and prominence for the queries that matter commercially. Optimise for the searches that produce jobs, not for the vanity of ranking first for your own name.
Google Business Profile: the highest-leverage hour
If you only do one block of work this month, do this. Choose the most specific primary category that fits — “emergency plumber” rather than “contractor”. Add every service with a short description. Upload photos that show the premises, the team, and finished work, and refresh them quarterly. Use the Posts feature for offers and updates; it is not a ranking factor on its own, but it feeds engagement signals and gives searchers a reason to click.
Then answer the questions section yourself before competitors do, and check that your website link points to the right location page rather than the homepage.
What to measure every month
- Map pack position for twenty commercial queries across your service area, checked from a fixed location or a rank-tracking tool.
- GBP actions — calls, direction requests, website clicks, and messages from the Business Profile dashboard.
- Review velocity — new reviews per month and average response time.
- Local landing page conversions — calls and form fills attributed to each location page.
Track the same twenty queries each month. Local rankings fluctuate with proximity, so compare the share of queries where you appear in the top three rather than a single position.
Mistakes that waste the whole effort
Keyword-stuffing the business name. “Best Plumber Cheap 24h London” gets suspended, and suspensions are slow to reverse.
One page for every city you can imagine. Thin doorway pages with swapped city names are ignored and can drag the whole site down.
Ignoring Apple and Bing. A meaningful share of local searches happens outside Google, and both have free business listings that take twenty minutes to claim.
Chasing citations over reviews. Fifty new directories will not outweigh a steady flow of recent, answered reviews.
Setting and forgetting. Hours change, staff change, and competitors get reviewed. Put a quarterly audit on the calendar; the checklist that is not re-run decays within a year.
Where this fits with AI search
Local intent has been relatively protected from AI Overviews so far, but that is changing. The same principles that make a page citable in an AI answer — clear entities, consistent NAP data, specific claims — also make it a better local result.
